History Of The Center

The UltraWellness Center opened in 2004 by Dr. Mark Hyman after nearly 10 years as the co-medical director of Canyon Ranch in Lenox. At Canyon Ranch, he pioneered the principles of Functional medicine and helped thousands achieve relief from treatment resistant chronic health problems, and discover optimal health and vitality – in a word, UltraWellness.

The UltraWellness Center was opened with two key goals in mind. First and foremost, to create a place where people could come to regain their health and find access to and benefit from medical science and information that has not yet been incorporated into conventional medical care, to experience the medicine of the future, today.

The UltraWellness Center is part of a collaborative research and practice network in Functional Medicine. If medicine is to change, three things must occur. First, physicians must be re-educated in a new model of care. Second, a reproducible clinical model must be developed so that other physicians can practice Functional Medicine. And third, leading clinical centers of Functional Medicine must participate in research to advance the science and demonstrate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this model so it can become widespread. The UltraWellness Center was created as a place where all of this can happen.
