FAQ’s – UWC Policies, Cost, etc.

Can I make an appointment with the Nutritionist if I’m not seeing your doctors?

YES, WE DO RECOMMEND that all our patients see one of our nutritionists. The “medical nutrition” that they practice is very different from what most nutritionists do. Also, it is very important to review the food allergies with our nutritionist once they become available, because the situation can be very complicated and hard to manage without assistance.

Are the doctors primary care physicians?

THE PHYSICIANS are trained as primary care physicians but they do not provide acute care services. We will work with you closely as consultants and coaches in preventive, nutritional and functional medicine to help you address the roots of chronic health problems. They can confer with your primary care doctor if required.

Can all the tests I need be done at The UltraWellness Center?

MOST OF THE TESTING can be performed at The UltraWellness Center. Some testing can be done through conventional laboratories and others are only available through specialty laboratories. During your medical consultation, your physician will determine which tests are needed and then our nurses will review testing recommendations, instructions (for instance, fasting or non-fasting, etc.) and costs.

Your financial resources, and how much testing you want to do, are taken into account and the plan for testing is reviewed with you. Testing is frequently done to assess nutritional status including amino acids, fatty acids, oxidative stress, vitamin levels, mitochondrial function, food allergies, and heavy metals. Many other tests are available, including genetic testing for a variety of conditions, hormone evaluations, bone health, gastrointestinal health, adrenal function and many others.

Some testing can be performed at home with test kits to collect urine, saliva or stool. Others may require you to go to a local laboratory to draw the blood. In all cases, we will assist you in coordinating initial and follow-up testing.

While the testing gives a more complete picture of your status, effective care can be implemented without it, or testing can be done over time. You should not let this prevent you from seeing one of the doctors.

Do I have to see the physician in person for my medical consultation?

YES, OUR DOCTORS’ MEDICAL licenses require that they meet with a patient in order to provide an initial medical consultation, and there is no substitute for that initial doctor-patient connection. Follow-up appointments can be arranged by phone or in the office.

Do the doctors prescribe medicines?

OUR DOCTORS CAN, and do, prescribe medications whenever necessary. They are fully licensed and Board-certified.

Do you take insurance?

THE ULTRAWELLNESS CENTER does not accept insurance or Medicare, and we do not file insurance paperwork on your behalf. However, we will provide a detailed receipt for services performed for you to submit to your insurance carriers.

Some insurance carriers may cover medical services and laboratory tests performed by the physicians. Payment in full by check, cash or credit card is due at the time services are provided.

Do you think you can help me with my health problem

OUR PHYSICIANS USE an innovative systems approach to assessing and treating your health care concerns. Perhaps you have experienced being examined by your doctor, having blood tests done, x-rays or other diagnostic tests taken, only for your doctor to report back that “all your tests are normal”. Yet, both you and your doctor know that you are sick. Unfortunately, this experience is all too common.

Most physicians were trained to look only in specific places for the answers, using the same familiar labs or diagnostic tests. Yet, many causes of illness cannot be found in these places. The usual tests do not look for food allergies, hidden infections, environmental toxins, mold exposures, nutritional deficiencies and metabolic imbalances. New gene testing can uncover underlying genetic predispositions that can be modified through diet, lifestyle, supplements or medications.

Dr. Hyman has pioneered the use of such testing to help his patients prevent illness and recover from many chronic and difficult to treat conditions. Our physicians are highly skilled in evaluating, assessing and treating chronic problems such as fibromyalgia, fatigue syndromes, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory disorders, mood and behavior disorders, memory problems, Parkinson’s disease and other chronic, complex conditions. We also focus on the prevention and treatment of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, hormonal imbalances and digestive disorders.

What credit cards do you accept?

WE ACCEPT THE following credit cards:

It is important to maintain an active credit card on file with our office for billing of follow-up consultations, laboratory testing, and other services. Payment is expected at time of service.

What do I need to bring to the appointment?

YOU SHOULD BRING all your vitamins and medicines in their original containers if possible. Old medical records are also very helpful, but if possible, these should be sent prior to the appointment.

They will provide recommendations based on your health concerns and tailor your diet based on medical evaluation and test results. You will follow-up with a nutritionist in person, by phone or email consultations.

Your location is inconvenient, what do I do?

You only need to come to the office for the first visit. After that you can do your follow up appointments by phone.

The UltraWellness Center

THE ULTRAWELLNESS CENTER was opened in 2004 by Dr. Mark Hyman after nearly 10 years as the co-medical director of nearby Canyon Ranch. At Canyon Ranch, he pioneered the principles of Functional Medicine and helped thousands achieve relief from treatment-resistant chronic health problems, and discover optimal health and vitality–in a word, UltraWellness.

The UltraWellness Center was opened with two key goals in mind:

  • First and foremost, to create a place where people could come to regain their health and find access to and benefit from medical science and information that has not yet been incorporated into conventional medical care; to experience the medicine of the future, today.
  • Second to become part of a collaborative research and practice network in Functional Medicine. If medicine is to change, three things must occur. First, physicians must be re-educated in a new model of care. Then, a reproducible clinical model must be developed so that other physicians can practice Functional Medicine. Lastly, leading clinical centers of Functional Medicine must participate in research to advance the science and demonstrate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this model so it can become widespread.

The UltraWellness Center was created as a place where all of this can happen.
