A Functional Medicine Approach to Fertility

Many people arrive at fertility care feeling confused or dismissed. Labs may come back “normal,” yet cycles feel off, energy is low, or conception isn’t happening. Conventional fertility care often focuses on isolated metrics — hormones, ovulation, egg count — without addressing the larger picture.

At The UltraWellness Center, fertility is viewed through a whole-body, root-cause lens. In our recent UltraLearning Series: Functional Fertility conversation, we explored why reproductive health is deeply connected to gut health, metabolic balance, inflammation, detoxification, and nervous system regulation — not just the reproductive organs themselves.

From a functional perspective, the ovaries are highly metabolically active organs. Chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, gut dysfunction, toxic exposures, and sustained stress can all interfere with reproductive signaling.

This conversation was led by Dr. Cindy Geyer, MD, triple board-certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine, alongside functional dietitian Lisa Dreher, MS, RDN, LDN.

Why a Functional Medicine Approach to Fertility

Rather than asking only whether someone is ovulating or producing eggs, functional fertility care asks:

  • What conditions are shaping reproductive function?
  • What signals may be interfering with fertility?
  • How can the internal environment be supported before or alongside treatment?

This approach does not replace conventional fertility care. It works alongside it to support both reproductive outcomes and long-term health.

What We Explored in the Webinar

In this session, we discussed fertility through a systems-based lens, including:

  • Why “normal” labs don’t always mean optimal fertility
  • How blood sugar, thyroid health, and inflammation influence reproductive outcomes
  • The role of nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental exposures in fertility
  • How functional medicine can support IVF, IUI, and other fertility treatments
  • Why fertility care works best as a team — including male partners
  • The importance of emotional support and nervous system regulation

A Supportive, Team-Based Model of Care

Many people arrive at fertility care feeling dismissed, rushed, or unsure where to start. Functional fertility care prioritizes listening, personalization, and collaboration — recognizing that fertility is both a physiological and emotional journey.

The goal is not perfection or control, but creating conditions that allow the body to function as optimally as possible.
