JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for drawing and processing blood samples, preparing take home kits and assisting patients with questions regarding laboratory test kits.

REPORTS TO: Clinical Services Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Blood draws, processing, and kit preparation
  • Assess patient’s vital signs and other preliminary information as needed
  • Completing paper or electronic requisition
  • Package and prepare blood samples for shipping or pick up
  • Answer patient questions regarding laboratory tests, and explain the importance of these tests
  • Enter laboratory charges for in house patients and ordered kits
  • Send out lab orders daily for patients seen on that day
  • Send out future lab orders, checking to ensure that there are no discontinued tests ordered
  • Process and send out specialty test kits twice a week
  • Assists with preparing specialty test kits, for in house patients to take home
  • Assists LPN as needed with Prior Authorizations and Medical Record Review
  • Download incoming lab results
  • Monitor Lab Fax In box

GENERAL OFFICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Responds to all e-mail and phone communication promptly
  • Assists with any other office duties as required
  • Assist management team with projects as directed UWC COMPLIANCE
  • Complies with all OSHA regulations
  • Complies with all HIPAA Privacy and Security Laws
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • 2 years of experience drawing blood
  • Experience drawing children preferable
  • Experience processing blood preferable
  • Must be able to work on several tasks simultaneously and work within tight deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the skills necessary to deal tactfully and professionally with vendors, patients, employees, and senior management

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures

JOB SUMMARY: Provide primary oversight for all laboratory functions to ensure efficient patient care and clinical compliance.

REPORTS TO: Clinical Services Manager

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide phlebotomy services to children, adults, and geriatric patients
  • Process specimens and prepare for and ship according to laboratory specifications
  • Documents clinical information and communications accurately and in timely manner in electronic medical record reflecting services and care coordination provided, and plans for future steps needed
  • Maintains medical laboratory equipment by establishing quality standards and certifying instrument performance, arranging equipment service and repair
  • Researches and identifies needed resources in patient’s community in accordance with treatment plan to ensure coordination of care, and assists with communications with these resources as appropriate
  • Assumes primary role between laboratory vendors and UWC, coordinates site visits and accurately keeps record of pricing data to ensure negotiation of best pricing
  • Assists Clinical Services Manager with vetting new laboratories, maintaining accurate record of contracts, fee schedules and OSHA requirements
  • Communicates & coordinates with lab testing companies regarding tests and procedure changes
  • Attends weekly Clinical Rounds and other UWC meetings as requested
  • Assists with projects as directed by Clinical Care Coordinator

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Send out lab orders daily for patients seen on that day
  • Send out future lab orders, checking to ensure that there are no discontinued tests ordered
  • Responds to e-mails, voice mails, and other messages in a timely manner

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Assess patient’s vital signs and other preliminary information as needed
  • Review, with patient, specialty kit instructions, medications/prescriptions, completion of consent forms, identification of lab/ other testing resources in their home community, and other issues requiring action steps to ensure smooth coordination of care (including provision for international needs)
  • Meet with patient to review lab testing ordered by provider
  • Monitors IV medications/supplies, ordering supplies as indicated in collaboration with lab personnel, ensures expiration dates are supplies are stored in accordance with guidelines.
  • Administers IV therapies per UWC protocols as prescribed by providers. Administration includes: proper mixing of sterile ingredients according to compounding safety standards, IV insertion, monitoring patients during infusion, patient education and documentation in EMR, and proper disposal of medical wastes
  • Assesses patient response to medications/nutritionals: adverse reactions and side-effects, as well as 2 UWC102019 issues with IV placement
  • Provides education regarding medication administration, medication-supplement interactions, and changes in medications, communications regarding medication modifications, etc.

COMPLIANCE TRAINING

  • Provides current and OSHA training annually to all staff
  • Provides BLS training to staff as needed UWC COMPLIANCE
  • Complies with all OSHA regulations
  • Complies with all HIPAA Privacy and Security Laws
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Certified to instruct BLS
  • Knowledge of OSHA laws and compliance regulations
  • Phlebotomy and IV therapy experience required
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills
  • Capable of working independently and cohesively with a team
  • Strong clinical skills: clinical judgement/decision making, assessment skills, ability to intervene within scope of practice and facilitate smooth patient care coordination
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism when dealing with difficult/demanding personalities
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and adhere to all HIPPA Laws
  • High level of computer proficiency, specifically with Electronic Medical Records, Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Excel
  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to multitask
  • Able to maintain accurate, detailed reports and records
  • Experience or knowledge of Functional Medicine, Integrative Medicine, or similar alternative/holistic therapies
  • Minimum of 2 years working as a nurse

TRAINING AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • BS or BSN Degree in Nursing
  • Current Registered Nurse license to practice in State of Massachusetts
  • Current BLS license
